CGPA to Percentage — Formula for Anna University, VTU, Mumbai University & More

Converting CGPA to percentage is confusing because every Indian university uses a different formula. This guide covers Anna University, VTU, Mumbai University, Delhi University, SPPU Pune, IP University and the UGC standard formula.

If you are writing your resume, filling a job application, or applying for higher education abroad, you have probably been asked for your percentage — but your marksheet shows CGPA. The frustrating part is that there is no single universal conversion formula in India. Anna University, VTU, Mumbai University and Delhi University all use different formulas. This guide covers every major university formula with examples.

Why Different Universities Have Different Formulas

The UGC (University Grants Commission) recommends a standard formula (CGPA × 9.5) but has not made it mandatory. As a result, individual universities developed their own grading systems and conversion formulas based on their historical grade distributions. This means a CGPA of 8.0 from Anna University converts to a different percentage than 8.0 from VTU — which causes confusion for students and employers alike.

CGPA to Percentage Formula — All Major Universities

Here are the official formulas for the most common Indian universities:

  1. 1UGC / AICTE (General): Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 — recommended for IITs, NITs, BITS and most engineering colleges
  2. 2Anna University: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 — official formula for all Anna University affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu
  3. 3VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University): Percentage = CGPA × 10 — used by VTU affiliated colleges in Karnataka
  4. 4Mumbai University: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 — used by University of Mumbai colleges
  5. 5Delhi University (DU): Percentage = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 100 — DU uses a 10-point scale equivalent to percentage
  6. 6SPPU Pune (Savitribai Phule Pune University): Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5
  7. 7IP University: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 — follows UGC recommendation

Example: Converting 7.5 CGPA to Percentage

Let us see how 7.5 CGPA converts under each formula: UGC formula gives 7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25%. Anna University gives (7.5 − 0.5) × 10 = 70%. VTU gives 7.5 × 10 = 75%. Mumbai University gives (7.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 67.5%. SPPU Pune gives (7.5 × 10) − 7.5 = 67.5%. The same CGPA of 7.5 can mean anywhere from 67.5% to 75% depending on your university. Always mention which formula you used when writing percentage on a resume.

What to Write on Your Resume — CGPA or Percentage?

For Indian companies, both are acceptable. Larger companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and most MNCs specify CGPA cutoffs (typically 6.0 or 7.0 CGPA) rather than percentages. For government jobs and PSU recruitment (UPSC, SSC, bank PO), percentage is usually required. For higher education abroad (MS, MBA), use CGPA as most international universities understand it better. When converting for a resume, always state the formula used in brackets — e.g. "7.8 CGPA (74.1% as per UGC formula)".

What if My University is Not Listed?

If your university uses a formula not listed here, check your official marksheet or university website for the conversion formula. Our CGPA calculator includes a "Custom" option where you can enter your own multiplier. Alternatively, contact your university's examination office — they are required to provide the official conversion formula on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a standard CGPA to percentage formula in India?

The UGC recommends CGPA × 9.5 as a standard, but it is not mandatory. Each university can and does use its own formula. Always use the formula specified by your specific university for official purposes.

My CGPA is on a 4.0 scale, not 10.0 — how do I convert?

Some colleges use a 4.0 GPA scale (common in CBSE schools and some private universities). For a 4.0 scale: Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4) × 100. So a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale = 80%. Our calculator is designed for the 10-point CGPA scale used by most Indian engineering and degree colleges.

Do companies verify CGPA to percentage conversion?

Large companies with background verification processes (TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, Accenture) will verify your original marksheet. If you write a converted percentage, it must match what comes out of your university's official formula. Using a higher-than-official formula on your resume counts as misrepresentation.

What CGPA is considered a first class?

Under the UGC system, First Class with Distinction is 8.5+ CGPA (80.75%+), First Class is 6.5–8.4 CGPA (61.75–79.8%), Second Class is 5.5–6.4 CGPA. These thresholds vary slightly by university.

Can I convert semester-wise CGPA to percentage?

Yes. Convert each semester's SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) using the same formula to get the semester percentage. For your overall percentage, use your final CGPA — not an average of semester SGPAs, as they are weighted differently by credit hours.
