Every Indian college student has been there — staring at their attendance record wondering "how many more classes can I miss?" or "how many do I need to attend to be safe for exams?" This guide explains the 75% rule, how to calculate attendance percentage manually, and how to use our free attendance calculator to get instant answers.
What is the 75% Attendance Rule in India?
The University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines require students to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in each subject to be eligible to sit for university examinations. This applies to most engineering colleges (affiliated to Anna University, VTU, AKTU, JNTU and others), degree colleges, and professional courses across India. Some colleges set a stricter 80% requirement or allow 65% only with a medical certificate.
How to Calculate Attendance Percentage Manually
The formula is straightforward: Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100. For example, if 80 classes have been held and you attended 62, your attendance is (62 ÷ 80) × 100 = 77.5%. You are safe at 77.5% — but only 2 more absences would drop you to 75%.
How Many Classes Can You Skip and Stay Above 75%?
This is the question every student actually wants answered. The formula to find how many future classes you can miss while staying at or above 75% is: Maximum skips = floor(Attended × 100/75 − Total Held). So if you have attended 62 out of 80 classes: 62 × 100/75 = 82.67 − 80 = 2.67, floored to 2. You can skip 2 more classes. Our calculator handles this instantly so you do not need to do the math yourself.
How Many Classes Must You Attend to Recover?
If your attendance is already below 75%, you need to attend consecutive classes to recover. The formula is: Classes needed = ceil((0.75 × Total − Attended) ÷ 0.25). For example, if you attended 50 out of 80 classes (62.5%), you need: ceil((0.75 × 80 − 50) ÷ 0.25) = ceil((60 − 50) ÷ 0.25) = ceil(40) = 40 consecutive classes without missing a single one. This is why falling below 75% mid-semester is very difficult to recover from.
Can You Get Attendance Condonation?
Many colleges allow attendance condonation (exemption) for attendance between 65–75% under specific conditions: medical emergencies with documentation, participation in college-approved events, NCC/NSS duties, or sports representation. The condonation limit and process varies by university. Check your college's specific rules — condonation is not automatic and must be applied for before exams.
Tips to Manage Attendance Without Stressing
Track your attendance weekly, not at the end of semester. Use our calculator at the start of each week to know your exact buffer. If you have labs and theory separately, track each subject individually — 75% applies per subject, not overall. Prioritise attendance in subjects where the professor is strict about marking or where you have low internal marks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does 75% attendance apply to each subject separately?
Yes. UGC guidelines and most universities apply the 75% rule per subject, not as an overall aggregate. You can have 90% in one subject and 60% in another — the 60% subject would make you ineligible for that paper's exam.
What happens if attendance falls below 75%?
You become a "detained" student for that subject — meaning you cannot sit for the university examination. You would have to either seek condonation or repeat the semester for that subject. This varies by university policy.
Does online attendance work the same way?
Yes. For colleges conducting online or hybrid classes, attendance in online sessions is counted the same way. Logging in but not participating may not count — check your college policy.
Is there a medical leave exemption?
Most universities allow medical leave to be counted as exempted (not absent) if you submit a valid medical certificate within the stipulated time — usually within one week of returning. The total exempted days cannot exceed a set limit (often 10–15 days per semester).
My college requires 80% — can I still use this calculator?
Yes. Our attendance calculator lets you set any target percentage, not just 75%. Simply enter 80 in the target field and the calculator will show how many classes you can skip or must attend to reach 80%.
